President’s Letter

Fall is officially here in New England and the New Year for the ABNNC has also officially kicked off!  We started the year off with the annual President’s Cocktail Party and this year’s theme was “Oktoberfest”.  I would like to thank Jeannine Stearns (Chairperson for Special Events) for all her hard work and dedication.  I would also like to thank Laura and Gary Wordsworth for hosting at the Bellows Farm Clubhouse in their community.  And a big congratulations to our costume contest winners – Jeannine Stearns, Alison Clement, and Christine and David Macdonald!  Great job dressing up!!!

Make sure you read the entire newsletter to see what is happening in all the interest groups.  Dining Out will have their first gathering this month as well as Wine Tasting.  Also, you won’t want to miss out on this year’s mid-year event – I can’t even begin to tell you how much fun we had last year and so many of us are looking forward to it again.  All’s I will say is it’s the 2nd AABNNCGWGMN so make sure you save the date – keep reading to find the date!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and all your family,

Brenda

Next Board Meeting: Wednesday, November 28, 7:00 p.m. (please note new time), at the home of Alison Clement, 111 Stow Street, Acton. Contact Alison at (978) 841-9944 if you need directions.

WINE TASTING

What:  Wines for Thanksgiving

When:  Saturday, November 17th, 2007

Host:    Melanie and Roger Kilburn’s House,  7 Huckleberry Lane, Acton

Pairing the right wine with Thanksgiving dinner is a significant challenge.  Not only is Thanksgiving a groaning board of flavors, there is the additional complication of guests with pallets with that range from sweet to dry.  On Saturday November 17th we will take the mystery out of choosing the right wine for Thanksgiving by tasting wines from Oregon and Washington.  The wines of the Pacific Northwest were built for Thanksgiving – from spicy and aromatic Gewürztraminer to elegant Pinot Noirs.

We will begin the festivities at 7:30 PM and encourage you to bring a wine friendly appetizer to share.  The fee will be $20 per person and as always, there will be no charge for the non-drinking designated driver.  We encourage everyone to enjoy the evening by drinking responsibly.

Please RSVP to Erik Molander at epmolander@gmail.com or call 978-263-0929 by Wednesday November 14th.

Peg and I toured the Oregon wine country in September and tasted over 70 wines.  I've selected a range of white wines – Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and red wines – Pinot Noir that reflect the style and character of the region.  We'll be drinking wines that are readily available in Acton and Boxborough as well as some that Oregonians never let out of the state.

LADIES NIGHT OUT

Our next adventure will be held on Thursday, December 6th, 2007 at 7:30pm.  We will be doing a little shopping (if you’d like but not required), a little sampling of wine & cheese, and lot of talking!  Please join us at Jeri James Boutique at 342 Great Road in Acton (the same shopping plaza as Cambridge Wear, Country Harvest Bread Company, and CVS – the corner of Routes 27 & 2A).  Please feel free to e-mail Brenda at pgtwo@comcast.net or call 978-298-5007 if you have any questions.

BOOK GROUP

A tiny but enthusiastic group met in October, and then chose our next few selections, so that those who can’t come to a particular meeting can get started on the next book(s):

In order to give us more time this month to read as the holidays approach, we’ll next meet on Wednesday, December 12 at 7:30pm to discuss The Mammy by Brendan O’Carroll: a quick read and a laugh-out-loud family tale just right for the holiday season. Then on January 24th we’ll meet to discuss Loving Frank by Nancy Horan. It’s the fictionalized tale of the woman who had a long and scandalous affair with Frank Lloyd Wright. From Booklist: “The novel has something for everyone—a romance, a history of architecture, and a philosophical and political debate on the role of women.” Other reviewers have called it graceful, assured, engrossing and provocative.

February’s book, a slim yet engaging tale called Sky Burial by Xinran Xue, is based on a true story which began in the 1950’s about a Chinese doctor who searches Tibet for her husband who is reported dead. Described as poignant and beautiful, it contains fascinating details of Tibetan culture and Buddhism. Date of the meeting TBA.

So check your calendars and start enjoying these good reads! Contact Susan Spector at Susan7890@aol.com or 978.266.8900 with Q’s or RSVP’S. December directions will be sent to you when you respond.

DINING OUT

Another interest group is back by popular demand!!!  The ABNNC will once again be “Dining Out” every other month.  This is a group of people that don’t want to fire up the grill, turn on the stove, and set the table for one Saturday night every other month.  The first “Dining Out” of the season will be a venture into Boston on Saturday, November 10th  to Clio Restaurant (www.cliorestaurant.com) at 8:00pm.  Clio is located at Mass Ave. & Commonwealth Ave.  Please RSVP to Shirlee at ss.stein@verizon.net.

Lunch Bunch News

Lunch bunch had a great 2nd lunch out this year. We were at the beautiful setting of Fruitlands Museum in Harvard. We were able to enjoy the spectacular fall views surrounding us. A lively group of 8 proved that we had interesting and diverse backgrounds from dance teacher to room style consultant!

Join us this month for some Asian fusion at the new restaurant Karma in Westford. Opened a couple of months ago the place is giving the Bamboo (for all those familiar with that venue) a run for its money. There is a great and fantastic value lunch menu to take advantage of. We will be lunching out on Wednesday, November 14th at 12.30. Karma is situated at 117 Littleton Road (Rt 110) Westford. In the mall on the main street next to Jo Ann Fabrics.

Hope to see you there.  Reply to melanie.kilburn@comcast.net by Monday 12th November

(Please note that we are looking for a group leader for this group.  If you are interested please call Brenda Mulcahy at 978-298-5007…Thanks!!!)
