New Year, New Board

Looking to get more involved in the ABNNC this year?  Then look no further – we have some positions still open!  If you are interested or would just like to know more about the club, please contact Brenda at president@abnewcomers.org or (978) 298-5007. We’re looking forward to getting to know you better!

Special Event

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2008 - The big finale for the 2nd AABNNGWGMN

The fun continues for the 2nd AABNNGWGMN – translation: the 2nd Annual Acton/Boxborough Newcomers & Neighbors Guess Who Game Mystery Night.  The event is underway and will finish up on Saturday, February 2, with a grand finale dinner at the Westford Regency at 7:15 pm SHARP!  Be sure to check out next month’s newsletter to read about all the excitement that was had.  Did anyone get caught delivering a clue or was someone guessed correctly?  You’ll just have to wait and see!

ABNN OPEN HOUSE

Please join us at Scupper Jack’s on Sunday, March 30th from 7 to 9 PM to welcome prospective members to Acton Boxborough Newcomers and Neighbors!  Board members and representatives from all special interest groups will be on hand to provide information about our events, activities, and interest groups. We will be serving a variety of appetizers along with a cash bar.

We encourage existing members to attend as well to enjoy some good food, a relaxing beverage, and some friendly conversation with old friends and people new to the community.  Come on out and show the real newcomers what a wonderful community they have chosen to be a part of!

Please RSVP to Alison Clement at vp@newcomers.org or 978-841-9944 by March 20th.

We hope to see you all at Scupper Jack’s!

DINNER GROUP

Dining In (aka Dinner Group) kicked off the New Year in great style with a Football buffet at the home of Alison and Luc Clement on January 12th.  More than 20 ABNN members cheered the Patriots to victory, sustained by an extensive board of appetizers, dinner and desserts with beverages of every description.

The next Dining In evening is scheduled for March 1st.  We've opted out of February because the calendar is filled with Clue Game dinner on February 2, Champagne and Chocolates on the 9th and Dining Out at Clios on the 16th.  Mark your calendars for March 1st.  As always, we need people willing to host so we can have several dinners.  A note for those new to the group, the format for Dining In is several small dinners simultaneously held at members' homes, usually comprised of 6 to 8 people.  The hosts provide the main course and ask the guests to bring appetizers, salad or dessert.  All guests bring their beverage of choice.

Please contact Peggy Molander at pdmolander@gmail.com or 978-263-0929 to sign up.

Bon Appétit!

WINE TASTING

Fine Art, Fine Champagne, Fine Chocolates and the Best of Friends  -- need we say more?

On Saturday February 9th we will have our Champagne and Chocolates party at the Powers Art Gallery at 144 Great Road Acton MA.  This is a terrific opportunity to enjoy the artwork and sample some of the great traditional and new world champagnes.  We will be tasting six sparkling wines that range from the off dry style of prosecco to traditional champagne.

The Powers Gallery will provide us with a private showing featuring the artwork of Suzanne Crocker.  The show includes many oil paintings by the artist as she continues in her study of color, form and light. Crocker uses bold color, light and shadow to convey a sense of serenity in her work. You can see a preview of the show at http://powersgallery.com/exhibit/jan08.html

We will begin the festivities at 7:30 PM and encourage you to bring your favorite Chocolate Confection or wine friendly appetizer to enliven the event even more.  The fee will be $20 per person and as always, there will be no charge for the non-drinking designated driver.  We encourage everyone to enjoy the evening by drinking responsibly.(Please note that even though this event is so close to Valentine's Day, it can not be used as a substitute for doing something exceptionally romantic on February 14.)

Please RSVP to Erik Molander at epmolander@gmail.com or call 978-263-0929 by Thursday February 7th.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday February 9th .

Cheers,  Erik Molander

LADIES NIGHT OUT

Ladies Night Out! March 6, 2008 @ 7 PM

Finally! The holiday decorations have been stored away and everyone is back in the swing of things for the new year...now, it's time for the lady of the house to treat herself!  Join us for a night out of pampering and friendship at Atir Natural Nail Care Clinic (115 Great Road, Acton) for 'Tini's & Toes! Choose a manicure or pedicure (or both!), grab a cocktail and a snack, snuggle down in a massage chair, and spend a relaxing evening doing something wonderful for yourself!  Check out the details at www.abnewcomers.org or contact Jeannine at specialevents@abnewcomers.org

BOOK GROUP

For our following selection, which will be reviewed on Tuesday, February 26th at 7:30, a different part of the world is explored through the story of Sky Burial by Xinran. Immerse yourself in Tibetan culture as a Chinese doctor searches Tibet, and her own soul, looking for her missing husband-- it’s a haunting and engrossing book that is based on a true story.

March meeting will take place on Thursday, March 27 at 7:30—we've decided to read one of the classics, something we may have read a long time ago and want to revisit with a fresh eye and new awareness, or perhaps never got around to reading but know we “should.” So, from the “Bucket List” of books, get hold of a copy of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The House of the Seven Gables and we’ll see you in March!

From suite101.com:

“Although not as popular over the decades as The Scarlet Letter, [The House of Seven Gables] was the book preferred by Hawthorne.”

“[Hawthorne declares that] ‘the truth, namely, that the wrong-doing of one generation lives into the successive ones...[becoming] a pure and uncontrollable mischief.’ It is the psychological implications of his moral that create the action of this story about two families… if you like a book where the mood and emotional mindset of the characters is conveyed in every minute description prepare to sit back and absorb this novel.”

Kindly RSVP to Susan Spector at book @abnewcomers.org  and directions will be sent to you.

DINING OUT

On February 16th 2008 the group will venture to one of Boston’s finest restaurants, called Clio Restaurant (www.cliorestaurant.com).  The group tried to go there last month but too many people signed up after the deadline and the restaurant was unable to accommodate us.  Clio is located at Mass Ave. & Commonwealth Ave.  We will be meeting at 8:00pm!

So PLEASE RSVP to Shirlee at ss.stein@verizon.net by Friday February 1st

Hope to see you there!  Shirlee

MAH JONGG

New member Nancy Blacksin is looking for experienced Mah Jongg players to play with on a regular basis.  Contact her at 617-320-3336 (cell) or nrsamuels@yahoo.com.

Lunch Bunch News

Well Fellow Lunch Bunchers, we’re heading on a road trip on Wednesday February 13th and will be venturing into Cambridge to Jasper White’s Summer Shack.  We went there a couple of years ago and we had a great meal and a fun time.  It’s got a funky casual atmosphere and some of the freshest seafood around.

"The philosophy behind Jasper White's Summer Shack is 'Food is Love' and proof is in the dishes. They offer the freshest seafood available including his famous pan-roasted lobster, hearty chowders, grilled fish, award winning fried chicken and even corn dogs for the kids. " -The Restaurant Review-

“With the best lobster and corn dogs in the land, the Summer Shack is a family favorite."  - Gourmet Magazine

For more information please visit the restaurant’s website at http://www.summershackrestaurant.com

Let’s plan to carpool too.  If you would like to drive, or would like a ride, please indicate this on your RSVP which is requested by February 8th to lunch@abnewcomers.org or contact Alison @ 978-841-9944.  Details concerning the carpooling and time will follow.
