Book Group – 7:30 |
Please join us at Scupper Jack’s on Sunday, March 30th from 7 to 9 PM to welcome prospective members to Acton Boxborough Newcomers and Neighbors! Board members and representatives from all special interest groups will be on hand to provide information about our events, activities, and interest groups. We will be serving a variety of appetizers along with a cash bar.
We encourage existing members to attend as well to enjoy some good food, a relaxing beverage, and some friendly conversation with old friends and people new to the community. Come on out and show the real newcomers what a wonderful community they have chosen to be a part of!
Please RSVP to Alison Clement at vp@newcomers.org or 978-841-9944 by March 20th.
We hope to see you all at Scupper Jack’s!
CELEBRATING SPRING POT LUCK DINNER
Dining In is kicking off the Spring season with a pot luck dinner at the home of Melanie and Roger Kilburn (7 Huckleberry Lane, Acton) on Saturday, April 5th at 7:30pm.
All Dining In members and anyone else in Newcomers are invited to attend this event. We will start with appetizers, followed by the main course and salads, and will finish off with coffee and desserts!
Please RSVP to Peggy Molander at pdmolander@gmail.com or 978-263-0929 by March 29th and let me know what you’d like to bring…i.e. appetizer, salad, or dessert. Please remember to bring your own beverages and if you intend to drink, please designate a driver.
Cheers and we hope to see you at the Kilburn’s!!!
Peggy
Anticipating yet another snow storm at this writing, we appreciate even more curling up with a good book. The rewards of reading are boundless, and, as reading is a “guy thing” too, we hope some of you gentlemen will find some of our selections of interest – your thoughts, presence and suggestions are welcome any time! Discussions are informal. And “There Will Be Snacks...”
Thursday, March 27th at 7:30
Our March selection is a tale from the American Classics shelf. Pick up a copy of The House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne and join the discussion. Compelled to explore the moral transgressions of his own Puritan ancestors, Hawthorne weaves into his “romance” (as he called it) mystery, greed, redemption, and the legacy of evil deeds:
“We think the book…surpasses the other works of the author.…It has delighted us; it has piqued a re-perusal; it has robbed us of a day, and made a present of a whole year of thoughtfulness …There is a certain tragic phase of humanity which, in our opinion, was never more powerfully embodied than by Hawthorne.”
--Herman Melville
A rave review by Melville. Can you pass that up??
If, however, you can’t make the March meeting, you can get a head start on the April and May selections: on Wednesday, April 30th we’ll be discussing The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, which received raves for its depiction of an autistic boy’s search for a dog’s killer. Hailed as “original, clever and genuinely moving,” this tale weaves love, bravery, surprise and “touching ironic humor” into an exceptional point-of-view story.
May’s tale (meeting date TBD) is The Commoner: A Novel by John Burnham Schwartz. This impeccably crafted story is based on the life of Empress Michiko of Japan, the first commoner to marry into the Japanese imperial family.
"…her freedom and ambition suffer under the stifling rituals of court life…Schwartz pulls off a grand feat in giving readers a moving dramatization of a cloistered world."

New member Nancy Blacksin is looking for experienced Mah Jongg players to play with on a regular basis. Contact her at 617-320-3336 (cell) or nrsamuels@yahoo.com.
Please join us at noon on Wednesday March 12th at Crossroads Café as we say farewell to one of our favorite Lunch Bunchers, Donna Silber who is moving to Texas later this month. We will really miss Donna’s great sense of humor and funny stories! Crossroads is located at 405 Nagog Square in Acton. You can find Crossroads’ menu in your ABNN directory!
Please RSVP to Alison by March 10 at lunch@abnewcomers.org or 978-841-9944.
Hope to see you there!
