You are invited to join us
for the annual summer BBQ! The BBQ is on Saturday, June 14th at 7:00pm at the
home of Alison and Luc Clément (111 Stow Street, Acton) - this year's theme is
Flag Day! We will have a DJ providing music and will feature a good old
American-style BBQ complete with hot dogs and hamburgers. You are invited
to bring along a salad, side dish or dessert that represents your
heritage. Please let us know what you plan to bring.
Dress for this 'adults only' event is casual, but please feel free to wear
something that represents your heritage. Also, if you have any flags (not
US, we have plenty) that you'd like to bring along and display, we'd love to
see them! Please be sure to RSVP thru e-vite, which has already been sent to
you.
As always, this event is BYOB. If you plan to drink alcoholic beverages, please
plan to have a designated driver.
BOOK
GROUP
We’ll be meeting next on Wednesday, May 28th at 7:30 pm to discuss our final selection for the year-- a truly fascinating story-- so take a break from the workday, school events or garden chores with a virtual trip to Japan. The Commoner: a Novel by John Burnham Schwartz is an impeccably crafted and meticulously researched historical novel based on the life of Empress Michiko, the first commoner to marry into the Japanese imperial family.
“Despised by her mother-in-law as an upstart and interloper, Michiko eventually succumbed to a depression so intense that she temporarily lost the ability to speak…Out of this heart-wrenching history, Schwartz has woven a delicate, elegiac tale, intensely moving and utterly convincing. He has imaginatively reconstructed the private story while remaining largely true to the scant details that have been reported to the public.” -Lesley Downer, New York Times
"…her freedom and ambition suffer under the stifling rituals of court life…Schwartz pulls off a grand feat in giving readers a moving dramatization of a cloistered world." –Publisher’s Weekly
If you think your in-laws are difficult…
And in June, we invite Club-wide participation in the following event:
CALLING ALL NEWCOMERS AND NEIGHBORS:
Got books?
COME JOIN THE BOOK SWAP!
Wednesday, June 25 7:00pm-9:00 pm
One Blue Heron Way, Acton
(home of the Boule’s)
Our Book Group ends its year with a BOOK SWAP/BOOK DONATION, and all members of AB Newcomers and Neighbors are invited! So gather your unwanted books that are collecting dust (children’s books too), and swap them for something new. Books left homeless at the end of the evening will be donated to the Acton and Boxboro libraries.
Books may be dropped off in two ways:
Bring them to the June 14th BBQ or
Bring them to the Swap
Time for Spring Cleaning and Summer Reading! Thanks for participating!

A Road Trip to Boston for our May Lunch Bunch!!
We will need to carpool to the Alewife T station and then take the T to get to the restaurant, but from the reviews, it sounds like it will be worth the trip to Petit Bistro Robert in Kenmore Square on Wednesday May 14th. The restaurant was voted #1 French Restaurant in Boston by Best of Boston Citysearch.
“Any place that promises "9 of Happiness" automatically gets a gold star (they mean the house burgerdog on a baguette ... or do they?), but Petit Robert Bistro deserves a trophy full of shiny escargots for its utterly tasty, totally affordable, tout francais dining experience. Nab something on the blackboard special (especially if you're not sure what it is), and sing yourself a little song called soupe à l'onion gratinée. They're not afraid to throw around the offal, which you'll forgive anyway with the last sweet crumbs of dainty macarons. Voulez-vous manger avec moi, ce soir?” The Dig – Best Places to Eat.

Sounds great, doesn’t it? Let’s meet in the K-Mart parking lot in Acton at 11am on May 14th and car pool from there. If you are interested in driving, please let me know. Please RSVP to Lunch@abnewcomers.org or call Alison at 978-841-9944 by May 13th.
I hope that you will join us! Cheers!
June Lunch Bunch! A Special Treat!
There’s nothing finer than getting that tax refund check in the mail…or IS there? How about FREE financial planning advice about that refund check along with a FREE lunch at Vincenzo’s Restaurant (1200 Main Street) in West Concord?? Kim Riggs of Ameriprise Financial Group will be hosting the lunch on Tuesday, June 10th @ 11:45 am (please be prompt!) for our group (up to 15 people…whether you got a refund check or not…) with a quick presentation. She will also leave materials behind so you can contact her privately if you so choose…there is absolutely NO obligation other than to enjoy Vincenzo’s traditional Italian fare, perhaps a glass of Chianti, and a nice afternoon out. Please RSVP by June 5th to lunch@abnewcomers.org or call Alison @ 978-841-9944 ASAP as we are limited to the first 15 people! Let’s have lunch and learn a bit … and remember to leave your wallet at home unless you plan on ordering an appetizer, alcohol, and/or dessert!”
Nancy Blacksin is looking for experienced Mah Jongg players to play with on a regular basis. Contact her at 617-320-3336 (cell) or nrsamuels@yahoo.com.
